Walter and Albert Lyman & Company founded Blanding (then called Grayson) in 1905 on a high mesa beneath Blue Mountain. The white primrose grew in abundance among the sage and cedar, so they called this area, near the heart of the Colorado Plateau, White Mesa. It was a rugged land, the last frontier of the old west, unmatched in its variety of plants, wildlife and geologic wonders.
